Door Opening Solutions for Behavioral Health

Door Opening Solutions for Behavioral Health

Behavioral health environments require thoughtful planning, and opening solutions play a critical role in maintaining safety. Selecting the right combination of hardware helps reduce risk and protect both patients and staff.

What Is Behavioral Health Hardware?

Behavioral health hardware is specifically designed to minimize harm within behavioral health facilities. Because patients may have full access to door openings, every component applied to a door or frame must be carefully evaluated to avoid creating hazards.

This is especially important in high-risk areas such as patient bedrooms, bathrooms, and seclusion rooms, where individuals may be unsupervised. The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) emphasizes that patient safety strategies should avoid systems or materials that can be weaponized, create sharp edges, or introduce ligature points in any accessible space. This applies to hinges, closers, handles, door stops, weatherstripping, and more.

Pemko offers a range of accessories, from hinges to gasketing, designed to reduce risk in behavioral health environments. For current compliance guidance, refer to OMH Patient Safety Standards.

Anti-Barricade Rescue Hardware

Anti-barricade hardware enables safe access when a door is obstructed and cannot be opened normally. A common solution combines a double-swing hinge with an emergency release stop to create a complete system.

Double Swing Continuous Hinge

Traditional hinges can introduce safety risks due to exposed joints and tight tolerances. A double swing continuous hinge addresses these concerns by allowing the door to swing up to 100 degrees in either direction.

This capability is critical in emergencies. If a patient collapses behind a door or uses an object to block it, staff can open the door from the opposite direction by disengaging the emergency stop.

The DSH1000 pin and barrel hinge supports doors up to 600 pounds and features a 3/32" offset, reducing ligature risks at the top of the opening.

Key benefits:

  • Enables wide, two-way door access for emergencies, equipment, and gurneys
  • Reduces pinch points and finger injury risk
  • Supports concealed electrified hardware
  • Maintains privacy while improving safety
  • Minimizes ligature points at the hinge
  • Improves alignment, durability, and door lifespan

Emergency Release Stop

The Pemko ERSBH Emergency Release Stop works with the double swing hinge to complete the anti-barricade system. In an emergency, the flush bolt releases, allowing the door to swing in the opposite direction. A two-second unlock time ensures a quick response during critical situations.

Perimeter Gaskets

Pemko soffit-mounted perimeter gaskets are tear-resistant and securely attached with an aluminum retainer, making them suitable for behavioral health settings.

Benefits include:

  • High tear resistance
  • Tamper-resistant design
  • Fire-rated up to 3 hours (depending on door construction)
  • Improved energy efficiency
  • PemkoPrene® (“PK”) option for exterior applications
