Where to Find BHMA Certified Products

Selecting a product that meets the latest performance standards can be challenging. Fortunately, the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) created the standards development process, and now you can easily find certified products using their easy-to-navigate online directory.

What are ANSI/BHMA standards?

Demonstrated performance via certification to industry standards is critical for builders' materials that are fundamental to providing a safe and secure built environment. For over 50 years, the vehicle for consensus recognition of these standards has been the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) process followed by the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA). This private non-profit organization develops and maintains the performance standards for builders' hardware. Following the ANSI Essential Requirements, these standards are updated at least every five years to reflect product innovation and testing methodologies advancements. In the United States, it is estimated that more than 80% of all manufacturers of builders' hardware are BHMA members, and many provide subject matter expertise to the standards.

What does builder hardware include?

Sometimes referred to as architectural hardware, these are products that provide functionality spanning weather sealing, security, aesthetic enhancements, and convenience to doors, windows, cabinetry, etc. Examples include locks, hinges, sliding & folding hardware, door closers, and exit devices, to name a few. In addition, over 40 standards are employed to demonstrate the performance, durability, and strength standards for the various types of builders' materials on the market.

For a product to be certified, a manufacturer submits its products for independent laboratory testing to confirm that the product fully meets the criteria of its ANSI/BHMA standard. Periodic testing is then conducted to maintain the certification.
