Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Deploys Medeco XT Traffic Cabinet Locks Statewide
What a win for the state of Virginia!
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Salem, Virginia-based Medeco partnered on a project to quickly update and harden security for more than 6,000 traffic cabinets across the state!
First Statewide Deployment
In doing so, Virginia became the first state to strengthen the physical and cyber security of its traffic infrastructure by deploying an Intelligent Key system state wide!
What is a traffic cabinet?
You may be wondering “What is a traffic cabinet?” The next time you are stopped at a red light, scan the intersection and see if there is a large, gray cabinet there. That’s likely a traffic cabinet, and they house sophisticated (and expensive) electronics that are critical to controlling traffic signals. Those cabinets also communicate over the state’s network infrastructure.
Until recently, nearly all VDOT cabinets were secured using only a standard mechanical lock and common key.
VDOT Chose Medeco XT
To strengthen both physical and cyber security measures, VDOT chose the Medeco XT Intelligent Key System as a simple retrofit replacement for its previous locks. Medeco XT is powered by software that allows for controlling access rights, grating/revoking permissions to openings, and time-and-date-stamped audit trails. No hard wiring is required to the cabinet, and one key grants the keyholder access to all the openings they are authorized to open.
How Did This Project Come Together?
As you can imagine, there are a lot of logistics and planning that go into a statewide security upgrade.
