The SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering Chooses SARGENT
“In addition to their functional advantages, we need to be able to easily handle parts for maintenance, and working with one manufacturer with a readily-available supply of parts and products is critical," says Hart.
The State University of New York’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) is one of the world’s most advanced centers for nanotechnology research, innovation and education. Located at the University at Albany, the CNSE’s Albany NanoTech Complex is a 1,300,000 square-foot facility that is state of the art in every respect – including its locks that include SARGENT 8200 Series mortise locks, 80 Series exit devices and 351 Series Powerglide® door closers.

In a place that thinks small, facility locksmith William J. Hart has a big responsibility – he oversees CNSE’s entire security system and every single bit of door hardware. CNSE is home to more than 3,100 scientists, researchers and students and people are constantly working in the facility, visiting and coming and going. “I need to ensure that all the door openings are working properly and interfacing with our security system 100 percent of the time, and that people have rapid egress in the event of an emergency,” explained Hart.
Hart has been a locksmith for almost 40 years and has worked with virtually every brand of hardware. “From long-term experience I knew that SARGENT was the best choice for CNSE. They offer an extremely broad line of application-specific locks, exit devices and door closers that let us select exactly the right product for every single door opening in our facility, which is a major consideration for all of our buildings on and off of our main site.”
SARGENT’s 8200 Series mortise locks are available in a wealth of lever and trim designs and functions, are ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certified and designed for extreme durability over millions of cycles.
SARGENT’s 80 Series exit devices are available in surface vertical rod, concealed vertical rod, rim, and mortise. They can be used with wood and metal doors and single door, double door and narrow-stile applications. A variety of options are available including EAC compatibility. Designed to last the life of the building, SARGENT exit devices have been tested to 54 million cycles, roughly the equivalent of 150 years of heavy use and 100 times the requirement for ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 and are available with UL, Fire and/or Panic listings. In addition, SARGENT exit devices conform to the regulations set down by the International Building Code (IBC) and other applicable requirements.
The SARGENT 351 Series Powerglide door closers are available in interior and exterior door models including push and pull-track arms and double-egress styles, and meet virtually every door closer application.
“Most of our hardware products here at CNSE are Sargent, their products have proven themselves time and time again,” Hart noted. “In addition to their functional advantages, we need to be able to easily handle parts for maintenance, and working with one manufacturer with a readily-available supply of parts and products is critical.”
“Additionally, all the SARGENT devices have been virtually maintenance-free. On those occasions when we do need to make repairs, they are easy.”
Hart finds that SARGENT’s attention to detail is yet another aspect that sets their products apart from the rest. “For example, I really like the design of the SARGENT 80 Series concealed vertical rod exit devices. They are easily adjustable and durable.” In testing, SARGENT concealed vertical rod devices have achieved over 16 million cycles without requiring adjustment or maintenance. ”I could name many other examples of design touches like this that make our SARGENT locks and exit devices easy to install, use and maintain.”
“As the person who oversees the security at CNSE, my responsibilities are considerable, to say the least,” Hart said. “SARGENT products are a key element of our facility’s security and every time I walk into the building I know we made the right choice.”
