How to Determine Door Closer Handing
Door closers are designed to close swing doors. There are two types: electromechanical and mechanical. Electromechanical door closers are powered by electricity; mechanical door closers are controlled by internal springs and hydraulic fluid. Whether used for security, privacy, or keeping hot/cool air inside, the best door closer product will not work unless installed properly. Most door closers are “handed”, meaning they are made to close a left- or right-handed swing door.
How to Handle Door Handing
Door closers are either left or right-handed. The following door handing diagram can be used to determine proper door handing:
- First, face the door.
- Determine if the hinges are on the left or right side.
- If the hinges are on the left, and the door swings away from you, the door is left-handed. If the door swings toward you, the door is right-handed.
Push or Pull Side Mounting
- A door closer can be mounted on the push or pull side of the door. The push side of the door means the door will swing away from you when opened.
- When the door closer is mounted on the pull side of the door, the door swings toward you when opened.
