All-in-one Door Kit Enables New York City Building Owners to Comply with Building Code Requiring ADA Compliant Trash Rooms
The 5800 Series Trash Room Door (TRD) kit from Norton Rixson is the only automated door solution designed specifically for trash room doors.
THE CHALLENGE
New York City’s building code mandates that trash rooms in newly constructed and renovated high-rise residential buildings be equipped with automated doors to make them fully accessible to disabled persons.
The Code stipulates that residents must have the ability to open trash room doors using a wall push button (Knowing Act Switch). It also requires that the door remains open until the space is vacated and closes and re-latches automatically.
THE SOLUTION
The 5800 Series Trash Room Door (TRD) kit from Norton Rixson is the only automated door solution designed specifically for trash room doors. The product is suitable for use with fire and smoke doors listed under UL10C-90 minute rating.
The all-in-one kit dramatically simplifies the installation process. It includes a door operator, 24VDC power supply cabinet with pre-wired occupancy sensor and two wall push buttons (Knowing Act Switches). Because the lock interface and occupancy sensor are pre-wired, it is easy to install and requires no ongoing maintenance.
In addition, the 5800 Series TRD operator consumes only about 1 watt of energy per year on average compared to traditional automated doors which consume about 25 watts per year. In fact, GreenCircle® has certified it to reduce energy consumption by as much as 91 percent versus other comparable door operators. The TRD system mounts on the door rather than above it to simplify retrofit installations.
The all-in-one kit includes:
- Low voltage door operator
- Mounting hardware for virtually any door and frame
- 24VDC 1 amp power supply
- Occupancy sensor
- (2) 1-3/4” surface mounted, stainless steel, hardwired push buttons
- Armored door cord
- 20’ of operator power and signal wire
Jeff Weinstein, vice president of Mayflower Sales Co., Inc., of Brooklyn, NY, a long-time distributor of ASSA ABLOY products said, “We often hear about architects, building owners and general contractors who are unaware of this code requirement and incur costly project delays when their building is denied a certificate of occupancy. This kit just makes it incredibly easy for them to comply with this aspect of the building code and keep their project schedule on track.”
This kit makes it incredibly easy for [building owners] to comply with this aspect of the building code and keep their project schedule on track.
Jay Vaitkus, director of Business Development for the Norton Rixson brand, said, “The team at Mayflower Sales has been instrumental in not only generating awareness of this building code requirement among New York City architects and contractors but also in promoting the existence of the 5800 Series Trash Room Door kit as a simple solution.”
Because the TRD system is pre-wired, it reduces on-site installation time and costs. Once a certified electrician has connected the electrical enclosure, a tradesperson simply mounts the operator to the door to render the system immediately operational.
Vincent Schmitt, owner of IAL Total Security in Long Island City, NY, said, “While the TRD kits are designed specifically for New York City buildings, it’s important to enlist a qualified electrician to do the rough-in work and to partner with an experienced installer to mount the control units. My team made quick work installing nearly 60 5800 Series TRD kits throughout Tower 28.”
